Elgar worked on his Piano Quintet and other chamber works during the summer of 1918, while staying in the countryside near Fittleworth, Sussex. He described the opening movement as “ghostly stuff,” and some have suggested that the Quintet follows a program related to Bulwer-Lytton’s A Strange Story, which the composer was reading at the time.
